Allen Farm

Each year my mother and her brothers would visit their old home place, Allen Farm in Milligan Tx to clean their brother’s and grandfather’s graves. They’ve long been abandoned and are so overgrown with weeds. Once they cleared the graves we would normally ride around the Farm so they could visit where they grew up, but I have a feeling this is the last year we’ll be able to do this since they no longer really want anyone driving on their property.
I’m sure when our great grandmother brought her family to work on Allen Farm she thought of it as the land of milk & honey ~ it was a Cotton Farm. They were given a small shotgun house to live in by the Tennant Farmers while they were hired to do the field work, tilling, planting, harvesting… it was 1945!! 80 years ago, the year our mother was born on Allen Farm. She said her family stayed here for 8 months, she’s the baby of the family. From April (or possibly before) until December they called this place home.
Here’s a picture of one of the Shotgun Houses they lived in. Last year when we visited there were a few still standing, they’ve now been demolished. My uncle visited one of the houses but it was full of bees and it sent them running to get away from them.

There were days of hard work, days of joy with a new baby being born and days of sadness with the loss of a son, one of my mother’s brothers suddenly died ~ hard times no doubt but these dusty roads and farm land still hold many memories!!
The farm has had many changes in the 80+ years, it’s now called the Moore/Terrell Farm, it has a wedding venue that was rebuilt from a previous grain barn, the Gin at Hidalgo Falls. Modern farm equipment has taken the place of the tenant laborers, most of the shotgun houses have been demolished and the General Store has long been gone. Here’s a picture of the store before it was demolished along with a picture of great Aunt that we took one year, but she’s since passed;

Just about every year we’ve made the trip back to Millican Tx. Here’s a picture of my mother and her brothers, cousin and her sister-in-law

This was their great Grandfathers grave.
Here are pics of the farms.

These shotgun houses are still located on the original farm. The main farmhouse is still located to the right of them

Some of the old barns on the property.

It’s still a working farm as you can see they’ve planted new crops.

Until next time Allen Farm.
